Any LEGO fan with a Star Wars fetish or Star Wars fan with an interest in LEGOs has to ask themselves just one question: what is cooler than a bounty hunter? IF the answer is nothing, then check out the LEGO Star Wars 7144 kit that includes the Slave I circa-Episode V. There are many different Slave I kits out there, mostly because of the unique and lengthy history of the Slave I. The mottled green, gray, and brown Slave I that comes with the LEGO Star Wars kit number 7144 is comprised of 160 plus pieces, with the remaining few pieces in the set being LEGO Star Wars figures: none other than the lethal bounty hunter LEGO Boba Fett himself and the carbonite block containing a captive LEGO Han Solo. There is no need to worry; Han Solo will be well protected inside that carbonite block.

Being comprised of over 160 LEGO blocks, the Slave I is very accurate to its famous movie counterpart, right down to the color selection. The twin articulated blaster cannons at the base, the retractable wings that deploy for greater maneuverability, the top-mounted translucent cockpit that actually works, the twin ordinance launchers that deploy mines or fire missiles, and even the huge rear engines are present.

Proper assembly of the Slave I can take some time and a little bit of patience considering the number of pieces and different color layers that give the Slave I a look akin to an old muscle car that is in mid-restore. The entire affair is the visual equivalent of Bondo on rust with a little bit of green thrown in from some Mandalorian influence. The climatic engagements between Han Solo and Boba Fett might cause Fett to describe the Slave I in much the same fashion as Solo would describe his beloved Millennium Falcon: She may not look like much, but she has it where it counts.

The LEGO Star Wars kit 7144 sure has it where it counts as well, and those with the skill and patience to assemble the Slave I will be able to enjoy countless hours imagining themselves taking part in the events of Star Wars Episode V or even portions of the Star Wars saga that took place between Episode V and VI. Just remember: No disintegrations! Lord Vader likes to have prisoners.

Bounty Hunters. Love ‘em or despise ‘em, they are an inseparable and critical element of the Star Wars universe. LEGO Star Wars kit 4487 includes the 53 individual pieces necessary to not only make Jango Fett’s Slave I starship, but also a Jedi Starfighter. The Save I come with articulated rotating wings, which can be deployed for additional surface control for dog fighting in asteroid belts, just like in Star Wars Episode II. The inclusion of the Jedi Starfighter allows for reenactments of the famous duel above Geonosis, but the big question is: Will the Jedi Starfighter emerge victorious this time, or will the bounty hunter finally prove once and for all that The Force is no match for a good blaster?
 
The comparatively small amount of pieces included with LEGO Star Wars 4487 is perfect for younger Star Wars fans that do not have the time or patience to assemble larger kits. Fifty-three pieces is not a simple task for some, but should be ideal for anyone 7 or over. Remember that both of the kits are considered to be ‘mini’ by nature, meaning that they create smaller items and lack character models. The lack of character models may be a deal breaker to some, but it probably will not be a major issue for those that just want to run around the house with two ships locked in mortal combat. Still, there are probably those that would not have minded starting the chase back on Kamino with the duel between Jango Fett and Obi Wan Kenobi. Alternatively, the lack of detailed and specific characters can allow greater freedom when it comes to the outcome, because every die hard Star Wars fan knows that Jango Fett would never leave Geonosis alive.

Both the Slave I and Jedi Starfighter are small but still reasonably accurate to their movie and cartoon counterparts. Areas of particular accuracy worthy of note are the color matching on both spaceships and articulated wings of the Slave I. As an added bonus, collect the LEGO Star Wars kits 4484-4487 and one will have enough pieces to build a special edition LEGO TIE Bomber, which is also a mini-class vehicle.

The LEGO Slave I 6209 contains the infamous and deadly bounty hunter ship known as the Slave I. The Slave I is the ship that Boba Fett inherited from his infamous father, Jango Fett upon his death on Geonosis at the hands of the Jedi. The LEGO Star Wars 6209 is a large, circa-Episode V (Empire Strikes Back) themed Slave I containing a staggering 537 pieces. Not all of the pieces are part of the incredibly lethal Slave I, there are also four included LEGO Star Wars figures: LEGO Boba Fett, Han Solo frozen in carbonite, Dengar, IG-88, and a single Bespin Guard. While Dengar and IG-88 are not mentioned in any of the films, Dengar does make a brief cameo in Episode V.

With over 500 pieces, this super-sized version of the Slave I takes time, patience and a little dexterity to assemble. It should thus come as no surprise that the minimum recommended age is 8 instead of 7 as with most other Star Wars LEGOs kits based around the Slave I, but the results of a proper build are amazing. The Slave I’s twin cannons can rotate, the wings can retract and deploy in stunning visual clarity, and the cockpit not only opens but also features a retracting seat for Boba Fett that adjusts itself when the ship lifts off. Of course, there is no rule stating that Dengar or IG-88 could not sneak into the Slave I and make off with one of the most famous ships in Star Wars history, but the chances of the Bespin guard pulling this off would seem to be slim to none. Chances are good that Jabba the Hutt would have rewarded just about anyone for bringing in Han Solo.

Putting the alternate Star Wars timeline aside for a minute, one of the nicer details is the actual inclusion of a rocket launcher that actually works. The detailed compartment for Han Solo is another nice touch, and makes the effort and time associated with assembling this version of the Slave I well worth it. The LEGO Star Wars kit 6209 is not the easiest or quickest Slave I build, but it is easily one of the best LEGO Star Wars kits to have ever been produced to date. The next best thing probably involves a visit to the Skywalker Ranch.

While Star Wars bounty hunter Jango Fett’s tenure as an onscreen antagonist might have been comparatively short compared to the reign of his son/clone Boba Fett, but he sure did seem to take better care of the Slave I his son/clone would later inhereit. The Slave I, under Jango Fett, was far more than the Firespray 31 prototype with a massive set of Kuat-drives installed, and the LEGO Star Wars version included with LEGO Jango Fett's Slave I 7153 is no different. This version of the legendary Slave I comes complete with retractable wings that are tied directly into the cockpit’s seat. When the wings are deployed, the orientation of the seat inside the cockpit changes.

Weighing in at over 350 pieces, some of which are linked and/or articulate, the LEGO Star Wars 7153 version of the Slave I is a relatively easy to assemble LEGO Star Wars kit. Armed with two rotating blasters, a pair of articulated laser beam cannons, and twin projectile launchers, the Slave I is a formidable craft to say the least. Just imagine assembling the Slave I in much the same way that Jango did after his escape from the asteroid prison Oovo IV. Once complete, just imagine the Slave I flying through asteroid fields in hot pursuit of its prey, or playing a deadly game of cat and mouse in a junk-strewn area of a space littered in the aftermath of the countless climatic battles that form the story of the incomparable Star Wars universe.

The set comes with a young LEGO Boba Fett and a LEGO Jango Fett model for those that cannot get enough of LEGO characters. The Boba Fett has a somewhat angry look to his face, while the Jango Fett model looks cool and competent without its optional headpiece/jetpack unit that can actually be worn by either of the Fetts when their hair has been removed. Both of the Fetts are wonderfully detailed, but it seems that particular care was paid to Jango. This may be due to the relevance of the kit being a circa-Episode II version of the Slave I, but young Boba Fett is also wonderfully detailed.

The Slave I itself appears to be very sleek and clean when fully put together, and its lack of rust or mottled gray colors has much to do with the fact that LEGO is attempting to make the Slave I look as pristine and well maintained as it did during Episode II.

There are four different LEGO Star Wars sets for the avid bounty hunter fan that build the Slave I Starship: 4487, 7144, 6209, and 7153. Each of these LEGO Star Wars kits contains the incomparable Slave I, and the kits can form a timeline of sorts starting with the Jango Fett's Slave I  7153. The LEGO 7153 is an average size Slave I kit, but it features fully articulated parts and accurate color representation by LEGO standards. The colors on the 7153 Slave I are designed to mimic the Episode II variant of the infamously lethal starship that is often the last thing those running from a Fett get to see.

The 4487 is a much smaller version of the circa-Episode II Slave I and comes with a detailed Jedi Starfighter to duel with. Both craft included in the 4487 are mini-size but the Slave I still retains its telltale folding wings and rotating blaster cannons that make short work of anyone who dares to cross a Fett or happens to have a bounty on their heads. The only question is: To disintegrate or capture alive?

The LEGO Star Wars kit 7144 is a reasonably large version of the circa-Episode V Slave I. The 6209 is a far larger and grander version of the circa-Episode V Slave I, but both come with a carbonite-clad Han Solo and Boba Fett. The Han Solo block of carbonite is simply too cute to pass up, and really changes the mood of the entire situation from one of eternal captivity to one of LEGO-fueled fun and adventure. Additionally, both feature several articulated parts including working cockpits, rotating cannons, and deployable wings. The big difference is that the larger 6209 kit comes with far more pieces and thus produces a more detailed and intricate Slave I than the 7144 kit does. This should not be surprising for LEGO fans considering the fact that more pieces almost always results in longer builds with better final results.

The two Episode V based Slave I kits show a certain lack of care for the Slave I’s exterior. While Star Wars lore lets fans know that Boba did keep the operational aspects of the Slave I up with the times, the exterior gives it the appearance of a muscle-car project that is never quite complete. Given the incredible amount of detail lavished on every aspect of Star Wars by George Lucas, this appears to be intentional and is well replicated by LEGO.

The Star Wars LEGO Boba Fett characters available with the Slave I 7144 and Slave I 6209 sets are examples of the amazing skill of the LEGO designers. Who else could manage to take one of the most lethal and dangerous bounty hunters in the known galaxy and turn him into something that is both cute and still dangerous looking depending on the situation and the perspective of the viewer? The amazing artistic skill is backed by LEGO’s legendary manufacturing skill, and the result is that LEGO Boba Fett was never so much fun to play with.

Instead of simply making Boba Fett a clone of his father’s LEGO character Jango Fett, which might be appropriate given his canonical place in Star Wars lore, LEGO created an entirely new paint scheme for their take on Boba Fett. Clad in gray trousers and a gray tunic that features a slightly more complex green on gray scheme than his father/genetic donor’s dark gray on light gray chest, Boba Fett looks surprisingly like his movie counterpart as far as LEGO characters go. The brown belt and waist may not be the best color match, but the greens are nearly dead-on for his memorable appearances in Star Wars Episodes V and VI, though can be a touch too bright at times. The green elements on Boba Fett’s shirt seem to indicate complex machinery, but only those brave or unfortunate enough to get close to this well known killing machine will ever truly know.

Boba Fett’s custom Mandalorian helmet and bounty hunter jetpack are a single piece affair, and the cute oversized helmet has nice stylistic tweaks that show LEGO’s famous attention to detail. Above the visor is a thin rim of brown trim and a pair of directional arrows facing opposing directions above the junction of the visor elements. The visor elements are further highlighted with brown the fades to black with a pair of reverse arcs on either cheek portion of his well-designed Mandalorian helment. A large black blaster pistol completes the look, and it is not hard to imagine children having hours of fun imagining LEGO Boba Fett blasting away at his enemies as his jetpack carries him up, up, and away.

Jango Fett has a very important place in the entire Star Wars mythos. He is the donor for the cells that created the legendary Boba Fett and the genetic basis for the clones used by the Republic. Whether or not those clones formed the backbone of the Empire’s Episode IV-VI storm trooper ranks is debatable, but the fact is that none of the clones or storm troopers seemed to ever match Jango’s wolfishly good looks. While the various LEGO Jango Fetts cannot hope to manage to recapture the onscreen appearance of one of the galaxy’s most famous and feared bounty hunters, the Jango Fett included with LEGO Jango Fett's Slave I 7153 is a prime example of how LEGO can take one of the most iconic characters from the Star Wars universe and manage to make it something unmistakably LEGO-ish.

The LEGO Jango Fett comes with blue legs and arms, black hands, a brown belt/waist segment, and a detailed gray suit. The gray suit gives the impression of being rumpled, and has 5 different light gray sections that stand out from the darker gray background. The coloration of the suit itself makes more sense when Jango is wearing his infamous Mandalorian helmet and backpack affair which he uses to fight Jedi or just enjoy a night out on the town when visiting Coruscant. Of course, Jango Fett’s idea of a night on the town usually includes a great deal of sneaking, spying, and at least a little killing or abduction, and the slightly sinister look on the face of his LEGO character certainly hints that there is a great deal more to Jango than meets the eye.

The LEGO version of Jango Fett is a standard sized LEGO character and can fit into any number of vehicles, including the Slave I that he is often sold with. With his distinct Mandalorian helmet and bounty hunter jetpack attached, he is simply lethal but still cool just as he was on that fateful afternoon in the arena on Geonosis. Without his Mandalorian helmet and bounty hunter jetpack, the LEGO Star Wars Jango Fett is still a unique character, but he cannot possibly match the roguish charm of his big screen counterpart.
